A wonderful image that is stereotypical however sympathetic and important in a musical sense.
Here we have an image of an actual “cigar box” guitar. “Cigar-box” guitars were functional,
home-made instruments, quite popular within the black community. This is one of the photog-
rapher’s better-known pieces, reproduced in a number of forms, the post-card being one of the
more popular.
